The Season of Preparation — Why What You Do Before the Frost Matters

There’s something powerful about preparation—especially when the weather doesn’t care about our plans.

This growing season in Tennessee (Zone 7B) reminded us just how important it is to prepare before the challenge shows up. As extreme cold temperatures rolled in, many gardens across the region shut down for the year. But instead of accepting loss, we paused, assessed, and pivoted with intention.

We invested in frost covers—both plastic and cloth—and protected our cabbage patch and Top Chop hybrid collards just in time. That decision became one of the most impactful pivots of our entire grow season.

Because of that preparation, we’re still growing fresh produce in late December—something that doesn’t happen by accident.

Preparation isn’t about fear.

It’s about stewardship.

In gardening, preparation looks like:

Watching weather patterns closely Having supplies ready before you need them Being willing to act quickly when conditions change

In life and community work, preparation looks much the same.

At Seeds of Growth Inc., we believe preparation allows us to serve longer, grow smarter, and protect what we’ve been entrusted with. Whether it’s produce in the ground or people in the community, what we do before the storm often determines what remains after it passes.

Growth doesn’t stop when temperatures drop—when preparation is in place.
